Occupy Nova Scotia and Remembrance Day - Degrading...
If there’s one thing you avoid doing at all costs in politics, it’s pissing off veterans. The same thing goes the anyone or group, as in the battle for public opinion, veterans tend to reign victorious. This is why the Occupy Nova Scotia demonstrators are only putting the ‘pedal-to-the-metal’ while driving straight for the edge of a cliff by choosing to remain in place...

Farewell to an iCon
When I opened my Facebook page after hours of working on a paper, I saw a post from Digg, “We will miss you, RIP!” followed by Steve’s name.  Initially, I felt like it was one of 4Chan’s usual “Goodnight Sweet Prince” jokes. Quickly typing “Steve Jobs” into Google taught me otherwise. While I had figured his cancer was back when he resigned from...

As I sat at work looking for any energy-sector related news that I could include in the association’s daily bulletin, news of a bombing in Norway began to trickle its way through my RSS feeds. Soon after, reports began to surface of a gunman at a Norwegian political party’s youth camp. It goes without saying that these attacks are outrageous and a tragedy.  Quite quickly, the boming...

I read a comment on Youtube saying, “If Jon Steward becomes president, I want Stephen Colbert to be VICE president”. I was going to say that a comedian would never be taken seriously as a candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Then I remembered a Hollywood actor was elected President in the 1980’s.

The Unions vs. Harper - And the Weakening of the...
“Force the strikers back to work!” That’s the mantra of the Conservative Party of Canada as they prepare to vote on legislation to send striking Canada Post employees back to their jobs as the two sides have been unable to reach an agreement so far. Heck, why would Canada Post even bother negotiating with the workers if they knew all along that the government would eventually...

N.B. Government brews weak Minimum Wage Policy
Apparently New Brunswick Labour Minister Martine Coulombe is considering some rather poor policy decision that will negatively affect the majority of service sector employees in the province. According to a CBC article, the Minister is considering a “two-tier system that would pay workers younger than 18 or trainees a lower wage”. Now, most people may initially think, “Who...

Here we go again.. Election 2011
I’ve been rather quiet on the federal election of 2011 so far. I suppose the main reason is that intially, I didn’t know where the campaign would end up. I didn’t know if Harper would surge thanks to a Dion-style blunder by Ignatieff, or would Harper’s track record since the last election end up turning the electorate against him.  What I didn’t expect at all was a...

The Cesspit that is the Sportsplex Bus Terminal
Want to ruin my morning? Aside from running out of milk for my Cheerios, the most effective way to make me sour at the start of the day is to make me stop off at the Dartmouth Sportsplex bus terminal. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, count yourself lucky. I generally like the idea of public transportation. It’s like being having a chauffeur, except he is always late,...

Facebook brings forth some 'Questions'
Facebook recently implemented its own native ‘polling system’, allowing users to ask and answer questions from both their friends as well as the larger Facebook community. When I logged on and saw my Facebook wall cluttered with questions such as, “Which is better? Coke or Pepsi?”, I quickly realized the genius behind this for Facebook. By adding this new feature, the...

Nationalism, Humanity, Tsunamis, and the United...
So one of the social-news websites I frequent has been plagued with posts of ignorant Facebook status updates that people have been posting since the tsunami that hit Japan a couple of days ago.  Calling such posts “ignorant” is an understatement. Posts, like the one posted above, are outright xenophobic and how a complete disregard for humanity. Many (seemingly American due to...

What overturning the CRTC's "Metered Internet"...
The Conservative government addressed growing public concern yesterday over a recent CRTC ruling on Usage Based Billing, (a metered internet). For those who don’t know, UBB would mean that consumers are monitored on their bandwidth (web usage) and are charged extra money if they go over their “cap” (anywhere between $1 to $5).  Like watching Youtube videos? Well, that’s...

New Years Resolution: Soda
Starting January 1, I will not drink soda carbonated beverages for at least two months, continuing on a more casual basis afterwards, i.e. Occasional use while out and no purchasing 2L bottles. I’ve never had a big problem with soda intake, but over the past few months its definitely increased for me to a point where I feel its necessary to stop it completely. Time for more milk!

U.S. Government begins censoring the global...
PSA: The U.S. Government has begun censoring the internet for all citizens around the globe, regardless of nationality. The U.S. government has seized the domain names of 70 websites after complaints had been filed against them. The government went to ICANN, the body that is essentially in charge of the oversight of global domain names. This means anything with a “.X”, they are in...

When Teachers turn a blind eye
I’ve been away from the blog for a while now, mostly because I’ve been busy with school and work. But I saw a video today that compelled me to come and do a brief write-up. I was quickly viewing Reddit while at school eating lunch in the library when I clicked on a link to a Youtube video. I wasn’t prepared to, but ended up watching 12 minutes of a Texas city councilman...

I Admit It: I Am Fascinated with Twitter
Twitter isn’t as popular as Facebook in Canada, (nor would I assume it’s like Facebook in the U.S. or elsewhere). With Facebook, you can assume that most individuals you meet, at least those under 30, have an account. Twitter on the other hand seems to be restricted to a sparse sector of the Canadian population. While I no longer have a Twitter account, I am proud to say that I found...

'iWipe': My Screen is Clean Again!
I was digging around under my bed today and came across the box for my Macbook Pro. It’s been a little over a year now since my dear laptop and I first met. I remember first taking it out of the box and being amazed by its beautiful screen as it displayed the OSX desktop. It was a masterpiece. Alas, in the year following our joyous union, Macbook hadn’t taken care of itself very...

The New 'iPod Button' Has Been Announced!
Yesterday, Apple overlord Steve Jobs announced an updates to the iPod line, but most significantly to the iPod Nano. The device has gone from one with a click-wheel to a small, button sized music playing device. I’m really tempted to pick 4 of these up to pin on my shirt and spell out ‘S-E-A-N’. The 1.5” screen is perfect for a high-tech name tag. Unfortunately,...

Digg.com Faces a Cave-in
The social news website Digg.com launched its 4.0 version of the website a few days ago, but unfortunately it has faced a cave-in by launching a buggy, unfinished version. The History I joined Digg back in 2006 when the site was relatively fresh. I heard about the website from founder and former G4/TechTV host Kevin Rose while talking on the network’s “Attack of the Show”...

Back in May of 2010, the Lower Manhattan Community Board approved the construction of a Islamic community center two blocks from the site where the World Trade Center towers once stood.  Two months after the approval of the community center, the media and its pundits have suddenly exploded with reports of outrage over its construction. Most notably opposing the construction of this Islamic center...

The New Inter-Website
After years of switching between Wordpress, Blogger, back to Wordpress, some weird start-up blogging websites, and then back to Blogger, I’ve decided to try out tumblr after a friend brought it up to me. So far, it seems to have a rather cozy interface. I like the ability to create short posts that don’t look completely ridiculous as they do in blogger, as I often don’t have the...
